Course Content:
Current Legislation & Local Resuscitation Protocols:
- Understanding the legal framework surrounding sports injuries and the responsibilities of healthcare providers and sports organisations.
- Key principles of duty of care in preventing and managing sports injuries, with a focus on risk management.
Roles and Responsibilities in an Emergency:
- Defining the roles of healthcare providers, team officials, and first responders in an emergency situation.
- Collaboration and communication during an emergency response.
Emergency Action Plan (EAP):
- Developing and implementing an Emergency Action Plan for sporting events and training sessions.
- Establishing protocols for rapid response and coordination in the event of a serious injury or medical emergency.
Primary A to E Approach in the Injured Player:
- A systematic, head-to-toe approach to injury assessment, including Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and Exposure (A-E).
- Rapid assessment to identify life-threatening conditions and prioritise interventions.
Basic Life Support (BLS) with AED Use:
- Hands-on training in Basic Life Support techniques, including CPR and the correct use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Practical skills for maintaining airway patency, chest compressions, and defibrillation.
Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy:
- Techniques for securing and maintaining an open airway in injured athletes.
- Indications for and methods of oxygen therapy in the field, including the safe use of oxygen administration equipment.
Head Injuries and Concussion:
- Identification and management of head injuries and concussions in athletes, including signs, symptoms, and emergency protocols.
- Best practices for immediate assessment, safe removal from play, and return-to-play considerations.
Spinal Injuries:
- Recognition of potential spinal injuries and immobilisation techniques.
- Safe spinal management protocols to prevent further harm, including the use of cervical collars and spinal boards.
Chest Injuries:
- Assessment and management of chest trauma, including rib fractures, pneumothorax, and hemothorax.
- Techniques for airway management and stabilising the chest wall in the event of a traumatic injury.
Pelvic Injuries:
- Recognition of pelvic fractures and associated complications, including hemorrhage.
- Immediate management strategies, including stabilising the pelvis and preventing further injury.
Abdominal Injuries:
- Identifying and managing abdominal trauma, including internal bleeding and organ injury.
- Immediate care and transport protocols for suspected abdominal injuries.
Limb-Threatening Fractures and Dislocations:
- Identification and management of severe limb injuries, including fractures and dislocations that threaten the function of the limb.
- Techniques for stabilisation and immobilisation, and when to seek advanced medical intervention.
Pain Relief, Including Entonox and Methoxyflurane:
- Overview of pain management strategies on the field, including the safe use of Entonox (nitrous oxide) and Methoxyflurane for analgesia.
- Indications, contraindications, and proper administration techniques for pain relief.
Medical Emergencies on the Sporting Field:
- Overview of other common medical emergencies, including asthma attacks, allergic reactions, cardiac events, and diabetic emergencies.
- Early recognition, appropriate response, and management of these conditions in a sports environment.

This course combines theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on training. Participants are required to complete self-directed theoretical knowledge prior to the practical session where they will engage in scenario-based learning, simulations, and skill stations designed to ensure readiness for real-life emergencies on the sports field.
